James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde

James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde (1350-1412)

We, the Butlers, came to Kilkenny in the retinue of King Henry II and were awarded Chief Butlership of Ireland. Our strong family connections with the monarchy meant we had tremendous power and influence nationally. I bought Kilkenny Castle from William the Earl Marshall's family in 1391 and the family stayed there until 1936. We gave the Castle and grounds to the Nation in 1967.
