Kilkenny Community and Voluntary Forum

Kilkenny Coummunity and Voluntary Forum
Fr Nicholas Flavin, Chairman of Kilkenny Community and Voluntary Forum, welcomed members to the recent AGM. He outlined the significant development that had taken place in the past year including the adoption of the Constitution at the previous AGM. This year also saw the Forum developing and functioning in a more professional manner with the opening of an office and the employment of a worker.

Marie Barcoe, a 5th year student in Duiske College Graiguenamanagh created the logo and motto for the Forum. Pic shows Marie receiving her prize of €1000 from Mayor Marie Fitzpatrick and Fr Nicholas Flavin! The 2005 theme of 'Communications' was evident by the launch of the logo and motto 'Making the Future Together'. Meetings, held twice during the year, took place in all five of Kilkenny's electoral area. Fr Flavin stated the importance of having a viable structure in each electoral area. Last year such a structure existed only in the Piltown electoral area but by the time of the AGM, similar structures were in place in North West Kilkenny and in the Callan area.

In his address, Fr Flavin spoke about the challenges ahead for the Forum. One is ensuring that its voice is heard and that it has effective representation on all local, county and national bodies where the voice of the community and voluntary sector should be heard. This involves people being willing to devote time and energy to working on behalf of the community. It is in policy development that a lot of this effective work will take place. It is slow but valuable in the long term. If the policy is right, then the right services will follow. The challenge is to ensure that the policy is right. To make your voice heard it is important to get involved with the Community and Voluntary Forum at electoral area level. There is room for all groups and all are welcome.

Community Day

Get ready for the 2006 Community Day on Sunday 29th October. This year the exhibition will be held in Freshford, during the Conker Festival.

This is a great opportunity for your group to:

  • Highlight and display your work
  • Put your community on the map
  • Network with other groups
  • Share information
  • Celebrate the work done by volunteers in the community

Tullahought hosted the
Community Day last year.
Organiser, Mary Egan had this to say

"Community network day provides your group with an amazing opportunity to promote your own locality to other communities and highlight the work you are doing. It was an honour to host the event ".

The community sector needs to create awareness and encourage involvement. If you haven't displayed
before, come and discover what it is all about --
meet some friends and enjoy the atmosphere!

Volunteer Week

From October 23rd to 29th 2006, Kilkenny will launch a week of celebration for all volunteers in the County. Celebration events will take place in each electoral area during that week. Free certificates and a special, custom-made badge will be available at each local event for all volunteers who attend. This promotional week will focus on the local community being aware of the positive contribution volunteers make. It also aims to raise the awareness of the benefits of giving time, inspiring a new generation of volunteers. The week will end with a community day for all voluntary and community groups on Sunday 29th in Freshford Hall, during their annual Conker Festival - a fun day for all the family!

"Volunteering is the commitment of time and energy, for the benefit of society, local communities, and individuals outside the immediate family, the environment or other causes. Voluntary activities are undertaken of a person's own free will, without payment, except for the reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses. The term volunteering covers many different activities. It can mean visiting an elderly or sick neighbour; giving blood; doing a sponsored walk; getting involved in your local scouting or guiding club; assisting a charity with its finances or administration; helping someone to read and write; planting trees ... the list is endless." (from Volunteering Ireland website)
In order to recognise and support volunteers, and to make sure they are invited to their local event, a form will be printed in the local media in the weeks running up to the promotional week to be filled in and sent back to the organisers.
